The total population count is over the next 25 years projected to decline from todays 55,986 persons to 51.853 in 2040. In 2040 there will be around 4.000 fewer people in Greenland than today, if no unexpected changes in fertility, mortality and migration occur. Over the 25 years the population's average age will increase to 37,6 years from 35,2 today. The population continues to be younger than, say the Danish population where the average age today is approx. 40 years.

Over the projection period, the share of elderly people (70 +) will double. The population in working ages will decline, but still constitute about half the population.
